AMHERST, NY The Buffalo Bulls (24, 11 MAC) won a shootout over Ohio University (42, 11 MAC) at UB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Senior quarterback Chazz Anderson and sophomore running back Branden Oliver led the Buffalo offense to an absolute field day, and the Bulls' defense came through when it was needed most and preserved a 3837 victory.
Anderson completed 23 of 39 passes for 343 yards and two touchdowns. He bounced back in a huge way after a muchmaligned performance last week against Tennessee, in which he threw for 99 yards and only completed eight passes.
Oliver has been arguably the Bulls' most consistent player this the north face outlet online year, but he, too, struggled last week against a stingy Tennessee defense. He refused to be kept in check for two consecutive weeks, running for a careerhigh 182 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Buffalo faced a fourthandgoal at the Ohio 1yardline, with the Bulls trailing 3431. Head coach Jeff Quinn said he never even considered kicking the field goal. Anderson, who was in shotgun formation, took the snap and handed to Oliver, who leapt over the defensive line for what would turn out to be the gamewinning touchdown.
"Our kids north face outlet learned a lot [tonight]," Quinn said. "I couldn't be more proud to be the head football coach and to be with these coaches and these young men to be able to get this win tonight."
Ohio kicked a field goal on the ensuing possession and then immediately held Buffalo to a threeandout. The Bobcats got the football back with a little under two minutes remaining, and they picked up a first down right away.
However, Buffalo stopped Ohio's passing attempts from gaining a first down on the next three plays, forcing a fourthandfive. Senior defensive tackle Richie Smith one of the team's most experienced players, and one of the only players remaining from Buffalo's 2008 International Bowl team burst through the Ohio offensive line and drilled quarterback Tyler Tettleton, forcing a fumble and sealing the win for Buffalo.
From there on out, it only took a few Anderson kneel downs to run out the clock.
The win comes at a crucial juncture for the Bulls, who had lost three straight coming into today.
Next Saturday, Buffalo will travel to Philadelphia to face the Temple Owls, who handily defeated Ball State today. Ball State bested the Bulls 2825 in week three.
"This [win] is huge," Smith said. "Next week for Temple, we'll get out our game film, make our corrections, and play with a little more confidence."
